Silver Eco Smart Award

26 May 2023

We’re delighted to announce that Canterbury Cathedral Lodge has achieved a silver award in the Greenage Venue Eco Smart Accreditation. Some of the highlights of the award include zero waste to landfill, 100% LED Lighting, and an accredited living wage employer. We also work with several local food and drink suppliers.

We are very proud to be the first Kent Venue to gain this award and also to offer a Green Day Delegate Rate. This includes new Hybrid AV equipment, so event organisers can allow delegates to join a meeting virtually; a vegan and vegetarian lunch, as well as refillable glass water bottles.

We work with the Cathedral Gardening team who use some of our food waste.

On the hotel side, we offer guests a refillable still and sparkling bottle despenser, as well as the option to opt out of room cleaning.

In our bar, we offer local gin from the Foundry in Canterbury, English wine from Chartham Vineyard, and local beer from Curious Brewery, Ashford. We even offer Kent crisps!

At the Cathedral Kiosk, all sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes and brownie’s are made by our in-house chefs.

At breakfast, we offer a freshly made-to-order Kentish English Breakfast using locally sourced cheese, milk, jams and eggs. Even our jam jars are upcycled and given to the local RNLI and used as money boxes to raise money.

In the Refectory Restaurant courtyard our gardeners are working on a new herb garden, which our chefs are very excited to be able to use the herbs when cooking.

We are always looking at new ways to improve our carbon footprint and help the environment.

Changes coming soon – a water station within the Cathedral precincts.  Flowers with no plastic packaging. The promotion of recycling to our guests by providing recycling bins.

Many Thanks to Danielle Ward at Reward Sustainable Events for all her help and expect advice on our sustainability journey.

Our target is to reach net zero by 2030 in conjunction with the Church of England.
